Understanding the Job

I was interested in a company that had a combination of access points into a house or business. One day Kano-san came into my office while I was reading their rather perplexing brochure.
“Do you have any company information to send to Itochu?”
“Yes, I think this one looks interesting. It has multiple protocol access to business locations for data transfer. I don’t quite understand it all but I think CTC engineers would like it.”
“Why do you think they would like it if you don’t understand it?”
“It seems like the kind of high speed networking that CTC does,” I replied, getting a little on the defensive now. “I figure they could review the information and decide.”
“Don’t send them information you do not understand. If you are just transferring documents, you are same as secretary.”
Well I certainly wasn’t making any points here. I understood what he was saying: I needed to be a pre-processor up front, distilling the best opportunities and knowing enough to communicate and convince CTC engineers. They didn’t have enough time to go over all of this, especially in English. That was my job.
Although I didn’t appreciate his managerial style, I had to concede his point. I was going to have to become a fast study if I were to have any credibility at all … especially with someone as revering of engineers as Kano-san.
